Warren Lee Seaman

Warren L. Seaman, 81, beloved husband and father, died peacefully on June 24, surrounded by family. A native of Bayou La Batre and lifelong resident of south Mobile County, he was preceded in death by his parents, Ilee Paulk McGallagher and Lee Franklin Seaman, a grandson, Joe Frank Wilson, and a brother, Ronnie Seaman. He is survived by his wife of 39 years, Rita A. Seaman; three daughters, N’Daria Darlin’ Seaman, Gina Darice Seaman and Tracy (Buddy) Seaman Hicks; two stepchildren, Casandra (Glenn) Andrews and Carl “Bleu” (Laura) Butler; two brothers, Donnie Seaman and John McGallagher; three sisters, Faye Roach, Renee Seaman and Joyce Windham; 11 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren, many relatives and dear friends. He and his wife owned and operated Bayou Lighting & Supply in Bayou La Batre for more than 35 years. In 1992, he was elected mayor of Bayou La Batre. He served two consecutive terms in office, working behind-the-scenes at the state level to bring an expanded hurricane evacuation route to south Mobile County. He believed a diversified economy would bring greater opportunities to those who lived and worked in the Bayou and surrounding communities. A graduate of Alba High School, Seaman worked in the off-shore oil industry for nearly two decades before starting his own electrical business in Bayou La Batre. An avid golfer, he was club champion at Driftwood Golf Course numerous times in the 1970s. He possessed a servant’s heart and volunteered his time for many community efforts outside of his public service. He supported the Methodist Children’s Home in Selma and served, along with his family, as a visiting resource for young people in state care. He enjoyed sharing his love of seafood with others and would load his double deep fryers onto a trailer and travel to Montgomery and beyond to prepare dinners for lawmakers to help raise awareness about the issues facing south Alabama residents. A member of First United Methodist Church of Bayou La Batre, he was past president of the Bayou La Batre Chamber of Commerce. Seaman served on the Board of Directors of the South Mobile County Board of Health and continued to work to make Bayou La Batre a better place for future generations.
