Thomas George Alsip

Thomas George Alsip, aged 92, a longtime resident of Mobile, Alabama, passed away on Tuesday, January 16, 2024, at a local hospital. Born in Mobile to Will George Alsip and Clara Pate Alsip, Tom also lived in Pensacola, Chickasaw, Port St. Joe, Tampa, and Puerto Rico as a child. He attended Murphy High School in Mobile and American High School in Puerto Rico, before graduating from Tampa’s Admiral Farragut Academy in 1950. After graduation Tom worked as a stevedore in Puerto Rico alongside his father. It was there that he met and married the love of his life, Nilda Rosa Fernandez, in 1953. The couple moved their young family to Texas in 1958, where Tom worked for Tandy Leather Company. A year later they returned to Mobile for Tom to manage the city’s new Tandy store. He later returned to the waterfront, taking roles in ship repair and stevedoring. In 1968 Tom embarked on a career as a safety engineer, a path also followed by his father. Over the next 50 years he worked for numerous companies including Bechtel, Pullman Kellogg, Southern Industries/Dravo, Fru-Con, AGC of America, and Safety Guidance Specialists. Tom also supported his community through his service with the Naval Reserve, Army Reserve, Army National Guard, and the US Coast Guard Auxiliary. He became a licensed EMT and taught first aid for the American Red Cross. He served as president of a Mobile Mystic Society and was a member of several other mystic societies. His hobbies included boating, fishing, scuba diving, hunting, and gardening. Mr. Alsip was predeceased by his parents and his wife of 67 years, Nilda Rosa Fernandez de Alsip. He is survived by his sons, Dr. Steven G. (Mary Jo) Alsip of Mobile and Dr. Jorge A. (Kathi) Alsip of Daphne; five grandchildren: Dr. Kathryn Alsip Cook of Tampa, Florida, Dr. Rebecca Alsip (Samy) Iskandar of Greenville, South Carolina, Thomas J. (Cristina) Alsip of Somersworth, New Hampshire, Dr. Mary Katherine Alsip (Wyley) Shreves of Seattle, Washington, and Abigail Alsip (David) Roveda of Hoover, Alabama; and five great-grandchildren: George David Roveda, Katherine Josephine Roveda, Cecelia Rose Alsip, Sara Caroline Iskandar, and Jake Iskandar. He also leaves behind many relatives and friends. The family will receive visitors at Serenity Funeral Home from 5-7 PM on Saturday, January 20, and the Rosary will be prayed at 6:30 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 AM on Monday, January 22, 2024, at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church with Reverend Monsignor James S. Kee as celebrant and the Reverend Marcin Dudziak as concelebrant. A graveside service will follow at Serenity Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alabama Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association, 2151 Highland Avenue South, Suite 210, Birmingham, AL 35205. Arrangements are by Serenity Funeral Home, Mobile, Alabama.
