Sybil L. Horton

Sybil Lovelle Horton was born on January 11th, 1937, in Houston Texas. Sybil passed away peacefully in her sleep on December 18th, 2024, with her daughter and grandson by her side. Sybil lived a very full life quilting, doll making, singing and traveling with her husband and friends. She was a faithful member if Springhill Avenue United Methodist Church where her beautiful voice could be heard in the choir on Sunday mornings. Sybil was an early master of computerized word processing. She had a long career where she worked in Atlanta, New York and DC. She also taught at 20th Century College here in Mobile, Alabama where she prepared many women and a few men to enter the workforce with fulfilling professional lives. Sybil was a very talented singer. Her junior high choir director paid for her voice lessons after recognizing her immense talent. She went on to study voice, music, Opera and music theatre at Lon Morris junior college and the University of Houston. She took part in many local productions during this time. Sybil met her husband Joe while directing the choir at Clark Memorial Methodist Church in Houston. Joe's father was the pastor at the time. While visiting his parents he saw her and heard her sing for the first time. He would tell his children he could never love another like Sybil. The parented three children together, Mark Gilbert, (Pam), Rebecca Horton and Renee Williams, (Larry.) She is preceded in death by her husband, Joe Paul Horton, her parents, Clinton and Lois Dillashaw, her sister, Clintine Cashion, her brother, Michael Dillashaw and her grandson, Jeremy Gilbert. She is survived by her three children, Mark, Becky and Renee. She is survived by six grandchildren, Bruce, Rachel, (Manu), Nicholas, (Meagan), Charles, Christopher, (Callie), and Alex. She is also survived by five great grandchildren, Isaiah, Ellen, Charlotte, Jonathan, Steven and Segan. Sybil will be remembered by all who knew her by her generosity and love of life. She will be missed by her family and many friends especially her little bee and the other members if the Azalea City Quilters Guild, the Mobile Opera and the choir from Springhill Avenue United Methodist Church. Sybil's celebration of life will take place. Services will be held on Saturday, December 21, 2024, at 11:00 am at Spring Hill United Methodist Church at Westside, 269 Mohawk St. Mobile, AL. A visitation will be held from 10:00 am until service time. Interment will follow at Serenity Memorial Gardens, 8951 Old Pascagoula Rd. Theodore, AL.
