Neil C. Hartley

Neil Cawthon Hartley (Semmes, AL), 86, passed away on March 22, 2025, surrounded by loved ones. He was born on June 18, 1938, and shared a loving marriage of 61 years with his wife, Annette Hartley. Neil was a devoted father to his four children: Steve Hartley, Tammy Johnson, Cindy Latham (Troy), and Neil Hartley (Jill). He was also a cherished grandfather to Jessica Mosley (Chaz), Anna Fisher (Thomas), Elizabeth Swinney (Stephen), Brittany Latham, Joshua Latham (Kayla), Cody Latham (Maddy), Austin Hartley, Madeline Hartley, Caysen Stiles, and Sarah Stiles. His legacy continues through his 11 great-grandchildren as well as the many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends who were blessed to know him. Neil is preceded in death by his parents Shellie Hartley Glover (Henry) and Claude Hartley, four brothers, Claude Carrol, William, Roy and Kenneth and one sister, Mary Frye. He is also preceded in death by a very special son in law, Christopher Johnson. Neil has 2 sisters that he adored. Judy (Dickey) Callen and Elaine (James) Moore. Upon graduating from C F Vigor High School in 1956, Neil joined the US Army, where he served his country with honor. Neil dedicated 20 years of service to Alcoa Aluminum before retiring. However, his hardworking spirit led him back into the workforce as an electrician until he retired a second time. Never one to sit still for long, Neil embraced life with enthusiasm. He had a passion for travel and often whisked his family away on spontaneous trips, especially to historic sites and battlefields. Camping was another cherished pastime, creating lasting memories with his children and grandchildren. He sang some of the silliest songs while camping like "Mr. Froggy Went A-Courting" and "There's a Hole in the Bottom of the Sea." Neil also loved taking an annual vacation with his siblings. Every fall you could count on them being somewhere in the mountains of Georgia, North Carolina or Tennessee. When not traveling or camping, Neil could be found at a ballpark cheering on his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. His unwavering love for his family was evident in every aspect of his life. Known for his ever-present smile and quick wit, he brought joy to all who knew him. Neil’s memory will live on in the hearts of those who loved him.
