Muriel Ernestine Fort Cowen August 5, 1926 - October 6, 2023 It is with heavy heart that we announce the passing of our mother, Muriel Fort Cowen, who peacefully departed this world on October 6, 2023. She was born on August 5, 1926, and brought light and love to all those she encountered. She was welcomed into the arms of Jesus in heaven by her husband Frank, her mother and father Eva & Elbert Fort, her son Kenneth Cowen, and her precious grandson Chad Cowen, who passed before her. Her friends and members of the community remember her for her many years of working as a clerk at the Grand Bay Post Office. She was a faithful member of First Baptist Church of Grand Bay, AL. She was one of the founders of the kindergarten at First Baptist and loved checking in vacation Bible children and serving refreshments. She graduated at sixteen from Mobile County High School and then studied at The University of Alabama. After marrying Frank, she became an avid Auburn fan. She loved to garden and was a Master Gardener and a member of the American Hemerocallis (Daylily) Society. She is survived by her children, Michael Cowen (Diane), and Dawn Rhodes (Wess), grandchildren, Tiffany Larson (Rick), Heather Riley (Scott), Kenny Cowen, Jr., and great-grandchildren Ava Larson, Kinley Larson, Daniel Rhodes, Katy Culbreth (Chad), Emily Bartell (Jeremy), great-great grandsons Maxwell Pineda and Ford Riley, and great-granddaughter Gray Riley who will forever cherish her memory and carry on the values that she instilled in them. Muriel will be missed by all who knew her, as her presence brightened the lives of those around her. Muriel was the "queen" of Mexican Train and Rummikub at Somerby Assisted Living where she spent the last four years of her life. She loved playing games and socializing with the other residents. We want to thank Karen Eldridge, Lea, Ingrid, Hope, and the loving staff at Somerby of Mobile for the love and care they gave our mother in her time there. All friends, family, and acquaintances are invited to pay their respects and celebrate the life of Muriel at a 12-noon service on Tuesday, October 10, 2023, at Serenity Funeral Home (8691 Old Pascagoula Road, Theodore, AL 36582. Visitation is from 11:00 am - 12 noon. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to the charity of your choice in memory of Muriel Cowen.
