Joye Coleman Booker

After a long, full life, our mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother left her earthly home on September 5, 2022. Joye grew up in McKenzie, AL where she met and married her forever sweetheart, Milfred Manning Booker. During their 76 years of marriage, Milfred’s career with the L&N Railroad took them to six different cities, eventually settling in Mobile, AL in 1961. Joye raised two sons, Mike and Keith, and spent her life being a devoted wife to Milfred. She worked as a library clerk at Vigor High School for 25 years. After retirement, she and her husband volunteered countless hours for The American Red Cross. On days she was not assisting Milfred delivering blood to hospitals, she was busy with administrative duties for the Red Cross. Joye and Milfred were the recipients of the distinguished Clara Barton Award for their selfless service to The Red Cross. Joye loved flowers and gardening, and enjoyed being a member of the Crestview Garden Club. Her favorite color was purple, and you could drive by their home of 60 years and see reflections of her in the purple irises and pansies. She and Milfred were a fixture in their neighborhood, always willing to lend a hand to elderly neighbors. They could always be seen riding bikes or taking long walks while stopping along the way to bring in a neighbor’s paper or mail. Mrs. Booker is survived by her husband, Milfred Manning Booker; two sons, R. Michael Booker, Sr. (Renee) of Birmingham, AL and Keith Manning Booker (Dawn) of Chapin, SC; grandchildren, R. Michael Booker, Jr. (Jennifer), Mary Ruth Bean (Colter), Landon Keith Booker (Rachel), and Tyler Manning Booker; five great-grandchildren, Gibson Colter Bean, Mary Paten Bean, R. Michael Booker III, Caroline Adele Booker, and Harrison Landon Booker; other relatives, and friends. A chapel service will be held Thursday, September 8, 2022 at 12 PM at Serenity Funeral Home, followed by interment in Serenity Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to The American Red Cross of Mobile. The family would like to thank our loving caregivers, Mary Ball and Diane Mosley, for their love and support.
