Imogene Carter Haynes

Imogene Haynes was born on April 3, 1950, to the late Lincoln and Odessa Carter in Louisville, Mississippi. She is the oldest of three children. Imogene accepted Christ at an early age and became an active member of Mount Calvary Missionary Baptist Church McCool, Mississippi. Imogene graduated from Camile Street High School (Trojan). She pursued her passion for education at Alcorn State University, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in education. Her career began at Goodman Pickens Elementary School in Goodman, Mississippi. Upon relocating to Moss Point, she joined the Moss Point School District, where she faithfully served until her retirement, some thirty-two years later. Imogene helped to educate thousands of students at East Park Elementary School, teaching third through sixth grade classes. Additionally, she shared her educational expertise through instruction of summer classes for Moss Point High School. She achieved many accomplishments throughout her career, including Teacher of the Year. During her tenure, she transcended the role of educator, becoming a counselor, confidant, friend, disciplinarian, and even a surrogate mother and grandmother to her students. Family was a cornerstone of Imogene’s life. She was a devoted Mother, Grandmother, Great-Grandmother, sister, auntie, and friend. She loved cooking, traveling, gardening, and anything that concern her family. Imogene entered holy matrimony On June 7th, 1969, with the late Kendrick Haynes, together they raised three beautiful children; Edrick (Deatosha) Haynes of Mobile, Alabama; Alberta Haynes of Pascagoula, Mississippi; and Kenton (Daphne) Haynes of Theodore, Alabama. Imogene was preceded in death by her parents, Lincoln Carter and Odessa Carter; and grandson, Alexzandir Scott. Her memory will be forever cherished by her two sisters, Doristean (Bennie) McLaughlin of Moss Point, Mississippi and Carolyn (Travis) Thames of Louisville, Mississippi, five grandchildren Zoe, Darius, and Edrick Haynes, Jr., Ruledra (Derrek Jr.) Reeves, J’avier Harris; four great-grandchildren, Lincoln, Cristiano, Dredan, and Railyn; a devoted family friend Charylene Mayo; and a host of nieces, nephews, family members, and friends.
