Betty Jean Overton

On this day, July 28, 2022, God called home one of his angels, Mrs. Betty J. Shelton Overton. Born April 3, 1950 in Greensboro, AL to the late Mrs. Nettie Mae Jackson Winston and Willie Clyde Shelton Sr., Mrs. Betty moved to Mobile, AL as a young child. As a young lady she attended Williamson High School where she met her long time friend and lifelong sister in God, Mrs. Gloria Burns. Upon leaving Williamson High School she met her late husband and moved to Queens, New York. Mrs. Betty Overton lived in New York for several years before moving back to Theodore, AL where she met another dear friend and sister in God, Ms. Dorothy Lee. Once returning back home for more than 50+ years, Mrs. Betty was a member of Fowl River Baptist church where the late Rev. William Parrish Sr. ministered. Mrs. Betty J. Shelton was preceded in death by her husband, Earnest J. Reed Overton; parents, Mrs. Nettie Mae Winston and Mr. Willie Clyde Sr.; grandmother, Cora B. Jackson; brother, Charles Jackson Sr.; 2 nephews, Charles Jackson Jr. and Frederick Jackson; uncle Isreal Jackson; and 2 great-grandchildren, Lavon K. Reed Jr. and Lauryn E. Reed. Carrying on her memories are her 5 devoted children, Laverne (Demi) Overton of Mobile, Michele (Tonnie) Clark of Cobb, GA, Wanda (Luke Johnson) Reed of Theodore, AL, Jovan (Antonio Ringold) Overton of Theodore, and Nicole (Michael Sr.) Conniff of Theodore; 12 devoted grandchildren, Candice & Lavon Reed Sr. of Mobile, Larion and Nicholas (Jonovia) Reed, of Savannah, GA, Xavier Rogers of Irvington, AL, Steven King, Librittney Overton, Michael Conniff Jr., Allison Conniff, William Walker, and Enique Stone, all of Theodore, and Brandon Overton of New York City; godson, Anthony Pope; 9 great-grandchildren, Kaydance Reed, Londyn Reed, Darion Reed, Gianna Reed, Harley King, Damien Rogers, Nicholas Reed Jr., Cameron Stevens, and K'Ree Conniff; 8 siblings, Patricia (Tony) West of Irvington, Catherine Hayes, Vanessa Hayes, and Melissa (Gerald) Johnson of Theodore, Ollie Wilson, Cynthia Hayes, Willie (Annette) Shelton, and Andrew Winston of Mobile, and Curtis (Deborah) Hayes of Pascagoula, MS; companion, Edward Graham of Theodore; a host of nieces and nephews, other relatives, and friends. To the longtime customers that remember her from Barnett Millworks, Brown and Root, Winn Dixie, the Big Chicken, and Friday night football, we as the Reed/Overton family would like to thank everyone who came to celebrate the loving homegoing of our beloved mother, grandmother, and sister, Mrs. Betty J. Overton. Visitation will be held on Saturday, August 6, 2022 from 10-11 AM at Serenity Funeral Home, followed by service at 11 AM. Interment will be held in Lawn Haven Memorial Gardens.
