Betty B. Hartzog

Betty Barber Hartzog went home to be with the Lord Jesus Christ on Thursday, January 30, 2025. She was born on March 20, 1932, in Ashford, Alabama. She attended Troy State Teachers College where she met and married the love of her life, Floyd Evans Hartzog. They both played trombone in the college band. She played the piano and organ and she taught piano for many years. When he was called to the Gospel Ministry in 1960, she took care of the household that included four children by then while he attended seminary. With him serving in churches in Mississippi and Alabama, she supported and served alongside him and has been a blessing to many people. They retired in the mid-1990’s and enjoyed visits from children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren once they were no longer able to travel on their own. In 2000 they moved in with their daughter and son-in-law in Theodore for more assistance and have been members of Tillmans Corner Baptist Church. While there they were able to celebrate their 72nd Wedding Anniversary prior to his passing. She was preceded in death by her parents, Mettie (Pearl) and James Austin (Dick) Barber. Betty and Evans were married on November 24, 1950. They have four children and spouses: Ronald Richard (Sarah), Rebecca Sue Hays (John), David Evans (Pamela), and William Michael who passed away at the age of 16 in Dothan, Alabama. They have five grandchildren and spouses: Jeremy (Kimberly), Bryan (Kelda), Kelli Duke (Ron), Brandon (Kim), and Rachel Hartzog-Johnson (Mike); seven great-grandchildren: Dale, Khyron Duke, Ethan, Kalleigh, Sadie, Ella, and Asa. She has a dear sister, Sue Hall. A graveside service will be held Thursday, February 6, 2025 at 12:00 pm at Memory Hills Cemetery in Dothan, Alabama. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Southern Baptist Convention International Missions Board at www.imb.org/generosity. Evans wrote this poem for Betty at his death: A faithful wife is she, No other one could there be. A life of joy in every breath, Can now reward her with a rest. Three-score and 12 of years together, Cannot match our hope of heaven; With heart-aches, sins, and regrets, We part with the knowledge of this forgiven. F.E.H (10/11/2017)
