Barry Gene McKinney

Barry Gene McKinney, a loving husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather, passed away on October 29th, in the comfort of his home. Barry was a longtime resident of Irvington, AL but was born in Anchorage, Alaska and has fond memories of living in Germany as a military brat. He graduated high school from Cherokee County High in Centre, Alabama and later followed his father’s footsteps and joined The United States Air Force. Barry was a hurricane hunter and a proud Vietnam Veteran. He spent most of his career as a boat captain in the oil field industry, he was a very hard worker and loved his crew. After retiring from the boats, he then became a safety specialist which he took great pride in. Barry was a lover of many things, some of which include music, the great outdoors, cooking, his dogs, and his family. He was very talented at playing the guitar and would often bring it offshore to jam out with coworkers. He enjoyed fishing and hunting and simply loved being out on the water. He always owned a boat of his own to take his family and friends on adventures. Barry was a great cook and loved food; he was mostly known for his infamous freshly baked bread. He loved vacationing with his wife, especially in Alaska, and spent most of his time home with his wife and dogs. They were a big comfort to him towards the end of his life. Barry Gene McKinney is proceeded in death by his parents, Bill and Eloise McKinney, his son LaVee Horne II and his brother in law Jim Long. Left to cherish his memory is his wife of 29 years, Elise McKinney, his sister Doris Long, his brother Mark (Teresa) McKinney, and his best friend Harris (Prisci) Long. Barry is survived by his children Jason McKinney, Corrine McKinney, Hank (Jaime) Thompson, Kristen (Chris) McKinney, John (Shirley) McKinney, Benjamin (Elizabeth) Thompson, and Kaitlin McKinney. He is also survived by seventeen grandchildren that he adored, Octavia, Farrah (Nick) Bender, Hailey (Cole) Bradley, Nick, Beatrice, Clementine, Tanner, Avary, Jailyn, Samantha, Isabella, Magnolia, Ellamae, Zane, Lincoln, Locke, Layka and four great grandchildren Hayden, Maize, Lennon and Hudson. Family and friends are invited to a memorial service in celebration of Barry’s life on Thursday, November 14, 2024 from 11:00-1:00pm for visitation and 1:00pm- 2:00pm for service at Serenity Funeral Home, 8691 Old Pascagoula Rd, Theodore, AL 36582.
