Vernon Leo Guimond Jr.

Vernon “Butch” Guimond, Jr. passed away peacefully on Saturday, January 7, 2023 after a private battle with cancer. Known to many of his friends as “Popeye,” he was born in Davenport, Iowa on June 9, 1947 and raised in Bristol, Pennsylvania. A forever sailor and drawn to the sea, Butch was a decorated submarine service Navy veteran, joining in 1964 and serving 25 years. He completed basic training at Naval Station Great Lakes and served stations in San Diego (CA), Anaheim (CA), Newport News (VA), Groton (CT), and Meridian (MS). During his career, he served on the USS Bluegill, USS Salmon, and the USS Grant (SSBN). He received multiple distinguished awards, including: Navy Commendation Medal, Navy Achievement Medal (4), Navy “E” Ribbon, Navy Good Conduct Medal, Certified Blue Nose Certificate, FBM Deterrent Patrol (4), Sea Service Deployment Ribbon (3) National Defense Service Medal, and the Vietnam Service Medal. Butch concluded his Naval career reaching the rank of E9 Master Chief Petty Officer (SS), which was his ultimate goal. Following his military retirement and a relocation to Gaston, Indiana, Butch successfully completed another 15-year career with the State of Indiana Department of Corrections where he managed all the training programs for the prison system. He completed his GED and ultimately continued into his college education. He enjoyed his retirement years in south Alabama, where he met and married his loving wife, Martha, and added their devoted Chihuahua, Coral. He proudly served the American Legion Post #250 in multiple roles, including Captain of the Honor Guard, Adjutant of the Post, and President of the Legion Riders. Butch is survived by his children, Wendy Guimond-Willis of Irvington, AL, Vernon “Butch” Guimond, III (Kim) of Coden, AL, Neena Wilcox (Chris) of Farmington, MN; step-daughter, Rhonda Naylor (Jason) of Owings, MD; brother, Earl Voorhees, Jr. of Yardley, PA.; grandchildren, Channing, Jerod, Caleb, Caitlin, Brittany, Audrey, Leah, Jacob, Jordan, Jackson, Reese, Jase, Jonah, and Ronnie; great-grandchild, Weston; nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends. He was preceded in death by his wife, Martha Guimond; mother, Dorothy (Cram) Voorhees; biological father, Vernon Guimond, Sr.; father, Earl Voorhees, Sr.; sons, Nicholas & Nathanial; siblings, Sandra Brown, Ronald Guimond, and Diane Krushnowski; and grandson, Christopher Willis. Services are on Thursday, January 12, 2023, as follows: Visitation will be held at Serenity Funeral Home on Thursday, January 12, 2023 from 12-2 PM, followed by service at 2 PM. Interment will beheld in Serenity Memorial Gardens. There will be a Celebration of Life lunch/dinner hosted at the American Legion Post 250 at 4 PM. In lieu flowers, the family invites donations be made to the American Legion Post 250, an organization Butch loved tremendously.
