Steven Wayne Lumpkin [May 24, 1949 – July 10, 2023] It is with deep sorrow and a profound sense of loss that we announce the passing of our beloved husband, father, grandfather, and a courageous Vietnam Veteran, who was a proud submarine sailor in the U.S. Navy. Steve passed peacefully in his home surrounded by loving family after a valiant battle with cancer. Born on May 24, 1949, in Newport News, Virginia, Steve grew up with a strong sense of duty and honor. Throughout his military career, Steve displayed exceptional valor and unwavering dedication to his fellow servicemen while in the United States Navy. After leaving the Navy, he worked for the U.S. Government and retired from the Mobile County Traffic Engineering Department in 2021. He was a loving father, a devoted grandfather, and a constant source of strength and support. His presence brought warmth, laughter, and love into the lives of those he held dear. He instilled in his children and grandchildren the values of integrity, perseverance, and compassion, which will forever guide them on their journeys. Steve leaves behind a profound and enduring legacy. He is survived by his loving wife, Paula Lumpkin; his children, Richard Gibson, Steven Duane Lumpkin (Carmen) and Michael Gibson (Kelly); his cherished grandchildren, Gabrielle McKeever (Douglas Kruse), Morgan Wade, Hali Gibson (Evan Wilks), Jeremiah Gibson, Justin Gibson, Steven Walker Lumpkin and Levi Gibson; and his brothers David Draper (Rosa) and Scott Draper (Becky). Steve was preceded in death by his parents, Raymond F. Lumpkin and May Vernon Mott-Draper (Troy) and brother, Michael Lumpkin. A memorial service to honor and celebrate the remarkable life of Steven Wayne Lumpkin will be held on Friday, July 14, 2023 from 5:00-7:00 p.m. and burial service Saturday, July 15, 2023 at 10:00 a.m. Military honors will be rendered, paying tribute to his service and the sacrifices he made for our nation. Family, friends, and fellow servicemen are invited to join together in remembrance of this extraordinary individual who served his country and loved his family dearly. We extend our deepest gratitude to all those who have offered their condolences and support during this difficult time. Your presence and compassion have provided us with comfort and strength.
