Sarah C. Cunningham

Sarah Catherine (Turner) Cunningham of Mobile, AL loved reading the obituaries and now she is in one. She would have been tickled pink to know that people are picking up their Sunday papers and getting a look at the portrait she took with the love of her life, Edward Eugene Cunningham, III. Her own joy of reading was curtailed peacefully in the wee hours of July 27, 2023, after spending a few days chatting and laughing with her children and close friends. Sarah was born Nov 2, 1937, to Festus Shelton and Emma Leona (Kennedy) Turner in Northport, AL. Her beginning was humble, complete with an outhouse, a party line telephone, and 8 preconceived siblings. The kitchen table was used for food prep, sewing undergarments from flour and sugar cloth sacks, light surgery, and listening to her daddy ask, “Hey, is that black-eyed peas in that bowl?”. Of course, the next thing he said was, “Didn’t you hear me ask you to pass the black-eyed peas?” Sarah had a few passions in life: nursing, fishing, golfing, flying small aircraft, gardening, crossword puzzles, and making acerbic comments about whatever and whoever flew across her radar. She both inherited and passed on a very interesting sense of humor. The irony of having a career of nursing which culminated in being a vital part of a stroke study, followed by having a stroke which limited her mobility in her final years, did not escape her. Sarah was the proud mother of a blended group of children: Karen Sutton of Indianapolis, IN, Sherman (Anna) Sutton of Denver, CO, Erin (Grant) Carter of Mobile, AL, Tracey (April) Sutton of Ft. Lauderdale, FL, and Stacey Butler of Mobile, AL, along with: Pam (Geoff) Harrison of Orange Beach, AL, Mary (David) Raisler of Milton, FL, and Edward Cunningham, IV of Milton, FL. She was the last of her 8 siblings to pass on. She also had to say goodbye to her daughter Stacey and her most wonderful Ed before her time was finished. Her twilight years were gladdened by her children, numerous grandchildren and greatchildren, her close friend Rosemary, along with other friends, her neighbors Tommy and Sherry, her caretakers, and her loyal, affectionate four-legged friend, Miss Kitty. Services will be held at Serenity Gardens in Mobile, AL on Monday, July 31, 2023 at 10 am with internment to follow. All are welcome. Although Sarah has tossed off this mortal coil and gone to a better place, it is still wicked hot down here on the Gulf of Mexico in summer. Feel free to wear lighter colors and bring an umbrella for shade.
