Sara Cowan Sargent

In Loving Memory of Sara Cowan Dixon Sargent March 9, 1936 – May 7, 2025 Sara Cowan Dixon Sargent, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, passed to her eternal reward on May 7, 2025, at the age of 89. Her life was marked by deep faith, gracious humility, and a legacy of love expressed most profoundly through her music and unwavering devotion to her family and to God. Born in Memphis, Tennessee, to H.A. and Louise Dixon, Sara grew up in a family deeply rooted in service to the Lord. The Dixons moved frequently as her father ministered to Churches of Christ across several cities, ultimately settling in Henderson, TN, where he served as president of Freed-Hardeman College. Sara attended high school there and later continued her education at Freed-Hardeman, completing her degree at Lipscomb University. On July 14, 1959, Sara married Glenn Sargent, beginning a 65-year journey of faith and partnership. As the devoted and supportive wife of a minister, she stood steadfastly beside Glenn in service to congregations across Tiptonville, TN; Naples, Italy; Nashville, TN; Stanton and Coahoma, TX; Marion and Aliceville, AL; and finally Mobile, AL, where they faithfully worshiped and served with the Creekwood Church of Christ. Also an accomplished musician and vocalist, Glenn lovingly recalls that Sara was his only accompanist for countless programs they performed thoughout the years. They loved to share their love of music with the community. Sara was an accomplished musician who shared her gift generously. Whether performing alongside Glenn or offering her music to soothe and inspire others, her piano was an instrument of love. Her children remember with deep affection the bedtime routines of Bible stories followed by listening to her play the piano after they were tucked in at night. They remember this music as their “lullaby”. She also passed the gift of music to perhaps hundreds of paino students over the course of 50 years. More than anything, Sara passed on her deep love for music and for her Lord Jesus Christ. Her life was a quiet but powerful testimony to grace, humility, and devotion. She leaves behind a legacy of faith that continues to resonate through the generations she nurtured. Sara was preceded in death by her parents, H.A. and Louise Dixon, and her brother and sister-in-law, Allen and Mary Jo Dixon, and great-grandsons Jared Johnson and John Sargent Stetzinger. She is survived by her loving husband, Glenn Sargent; their four children, Steve (Lisa), David (Patrice), Sonia (Ronald), and Silvia (Mark); eleven cherished grandchildren, Blake, Britney, Lacey, Jon David, Brandon, Haley, Emma, Sargent, Barton, Sara Ann, and Jesse; and nine great-grandchildren, with two more soon to arrive. She also leaves behind a host of nieces and nephews who knew her as a constant source of love and encouragement. Sara’s gentle spirit, unwavering faith, and love of beauty—especially in music—touched the hearts of all who knew her. While her absence is deeply felt, we rejoice in the hope to which she held fast, and in the promise of reunion in the presence of her Savior. There was music in my mother’s house. There was music all around. There was music in my mother’s house. And my heart’s still full with the sound. Those days come back so clearly although I’m far away. She gave me the kind of gift I love to give away. And when my mother died and she’d sung her last song. We sat in the living room singing all night long.
