Sam E. Hagy Sr.

On May 26, 2023, Sam Hagy, age 91, passed peacefully from this life into the eternal gates of Heaven while surrounded by those he loved and who loved him. Born the fourth child to John and Virtie Hagy in the mountains of Tazewell, Virginia, Sam refused to end up in the coal mines. In 1951, he joined the US Air Force as a military policeman where he served in the Korean War. In September 1953, while stationed at Brookley Field in Mobile, AL, he met Florence Taylor at the VFW club. He knew immediately that she was his life-long love. Soon after, on November 30, 1953, they were married. Sam would go on to get his barber license and secure a spot at Schambeau’s grocery to become what many might call Bayou La Batre’s most well-known barber. He would then spend the next 50+ years lowering ears as the absolute best and most sought after barber in town until his retirement at age 83 in 2016. He gave many first haircuts to the men and some women in the Bayou, some of them for free. Sam and Florence managed to have all granddaughters, Jaime first, followed by Sammi Jo, Jill, Meggan and then great-granddaughters Jailyn(Jaime), Lydia and Maddie(Sammi Jo). Many weekends were spent riding bicycles and flounder fishing on Dauphin Island, teaching haircuts in his barber shop, and checking countless tires and oil for the girls he loved. Sam will leave behind a beautiful legacy filled with memories, laughter and love. He lives on through those he loved and left behind: his one and only true love, Florence, Rhonda Hagy Miller (James), Sam Elbert Hagy, Jr (Wendy), Jaime Thompson (Hank), Samantha Wendt (Ryan), Jill Hagy, Meggan Bosarge, Jailyn Swink, Lydia Wendt, Maddie Wendt. Not to mention countless friends in the community, extended family members, his loving sister Sue Ryan and a brother. His service will be held on Thursday, June 1, 2023 from the Chapel of Serenity Funeral home with a viewing from 11:00am-1:00pm. Interment will follow in Oddfellows Cemetery. Pallbearers will be: Sam Hagy Jr., Wendy Hagy, Ryan Wendt, Scott Taylor, Keith Zirlott, and Meggan Bosarge. Honorary pallbearers are Hank Thompson and James Miller. In lieu of flowers, cut your neighbor’s yard or give someone that needs it a haircut.
