Roberta Louise Randez

Roberta "Susie" Louise Chapman Randez was born on November 19, 1943 in Canton, OH and passed away on October 16, 2022 in Mobile, AL at the age of 78 following a brief illness. With both a father (Air Force) and a husband (Army) who served in the United States military, she lived in many other places throughout her life including Florida, Hawaii, Texas, Virginia, and Japan. She was preceded in death by her parents, Crawford L. and Alvira J. Wilson Chapman; sister, Portia Kaye Powell; husband, Albert Randez III; great-grandson, Aidan Ross Raiborn; and beloved daughter, Cynthia Lynne Raiborn. Generous to a fault, Sue was an extremely devoted mother, daughter, sister, aunt, grandmother, and great-grandmother who cherished her family above all else. She also served as a surrogate mother and grandmother to many non-relatives, as she believed everyone was deserving of love. She is survived by her daughter, Beverly Randez (Roger Smith); grandchildren, Angel Thomas (Jason), Aaron Raiborn, and Brandi Thorn (Joseph); great-grandchildren, Chayse Thomas, Chance Thomas, Kinzley Thorn, Natalie Thorn, Emma Thorn, Tristan Raiborn, Liam Raiborn, and Ethan Raiborn; brothers, Crawford Lionel (Sonny) Chapman II, Allan Burton Chapman, Donald Fred Chapman, and Stanley Edward Chapman; nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends. As a young adult, Sue worked in a law office in San Antonio, TX and many years later learned how to transcribe stenographers’ notes from court proceedings and attended court reporting school herself. She spent the longest period of her professional career working as a secretary for the company now known as Ernst & Young (EY), and concluded her career with a position at the Region 20 Educational Service Center in Texas before retiring. Although she suffered serious injuries in a car accident in 2004, Sue did not let her physical ailments slow her down. She was a stubborn and determined woman who laughed heartily, forgave easily and loved completely. She was also an avid crossword puzzle solver and a competitive game player who taught her daughters, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren how to play Scrabble, Rummy, and many other board and card games. Sue also demonstrated impressive creative talents, having made many painted ceramic figurines, crocheted blankets, macraméd items, and Christmas tree ornaments with and for her family. In addition, she was an avid seamstress who knew her way around a sewing machine and created many quilts, articles of clothing, and Halloween costumes over the years. A memorial and interment will be held at Serenity Memorial Gardens in Theodore, AL in summer 2023.
