Myrtice Moppins Powe

Sister Myrtice Moppins Powe, a native of Mobile, Alabama, was the daughter of Thomas Moppins, Sr. and Lucille Hall Moppins, and the sister of Joseph Moppins and Thomas Moppins, Jr. All preceded her in death. As a child, Myrtice attended A.F. Owens Elementary School and Dunbar Annex. As a young adult, she was the Annual featured Soloist for Miss Lonna Patton’s (former owner of the Historic Patton House) Program at Big Zion Church. Myrtice was a 1946 graduate of Dunbar High School and a 1953 graduate of Dilliard University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing. During her 40+ year career as a nurse, she spent 35+ years at Providence Hospital, where she worked as a general floor nurse and the Head Nurse. Once she retired from Providence Hospital, she worked 5+ years at Mobile Infirmary, where she gave assistance in any department that needed skilled nurses. In addition to working in these two hospitals, Myrtice taught aspiring nurses for almost a decade at the former Carver State Technical College, currently Bishop State Community College. During her professional career, she was a member of the American Nurses Association and the National League of Nursing. As a Christian, she was a dedicated member of Stewart Memorial Christian Methodist Episcopal (CME) Church, where she exemplified leadership and service. Her leadership roles included the Primary Instructor of the federally-funded SMART Tutorial Program, President of the Board of Christian Education, President of Stewardess Board #2, District Vice President of the Stewardess Board, Secretary of the Lay Council, Secretary of the local and District Missionary Society, Recording Secretary of the Steward Board, Secretary of Stewart Memorial CME Church, Secretary of the Christian Health Awareness Group, and Teacher in the Sunday School. Her memberships encompass the Board of Stewards, God’s Golden Gems, the Mass Choir, the Kitchen Committee and a host of other activities too numerous to name. For over forty years, she was married to Eugene M. Powe (deceased 2004). She is survived by two daughters: Yvette Todd Anderson; Dr. Aleeta Powe (Dwayne Sorrell); one grandson, Brandon Powe; one great-grandson, Giovanni Powe; numerous devoted nieces and nephews, Jacqueline Moppins, Marie Irby (Michael), Regina Inge (Derrick), Dana Maxwell, Vanessa Moppins (deceased)(Warren), Vernita Warthen, Thomas Moppins, III (Minnie) and Cornelius Moppins (Rose), Charles Maxwell (Norma). Two close cousins, Idella Hamm of Philadelphia, PA and Ms. Rosetta Clemons; two God-brothers, Rev. Dr. Neolin Craig (recently deceased) and Ira Burks, Jr. and a host of other family members and friends. A visitation will be held on Friday, March 7, 2025, from 5:00 pm until 7:00 pm at Serenity Funeral Home, 8691 Old Pascagoula Rd. Theodore, AL 36582. Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, March 8, 2025, at 11:00 am from the Chapel of Serenity Funeral Home. Interment will follow in Lawn Haven Memorial Gardens.
