Julian Rountree Farill

Julian Rountree Farill, born May 28, 1930, in Evergreen, Alabama, passed away on April 29, 2023. He was 92 years old and a resident of Mobile for 81 years. Julian graduated from Murphy High School in 1948. He married Millie Morgan Farill on August 12, 1955, at St. Francis Street Methodist Church in a double wedding with his identical twin brother, John Rodgers Farill (Barbara). Julian and Millie were married for 57 years until Millie's passing. Julian and John enlisted in the U.S. Naval Reserve on November 27, 1947, six months before graduating high school. They began working together as civil service employees at Brookley Air Force Base in Mobile on August 23, 1951. However, their civil service careers were cut short in January 1952 when they received orders for active duty in Korea. They went to Bainbridge, Maryland and Little Creek, Virginia, where they trained as Amphibious Construction Battalion Seabees. They served four months in Puerto Rico until the Korean War ended in 1953. After completing active duty, they returned home to their jobs at Brookley and the U.S. Naval Reserves in January 1954. They both met their wives at the same time at a church function welcoming the soldiers back home. After Brookley Field closed in the late 1960s, Julian and John started working in the same shop at the Naval Air Rework Facility (NARF) in Pensacola, Florida—Julian as an Equipment Operator 1st Class and John as an aircraft mechanic. The brothers enjoyed many years of mistaken identity and loved confusing their coworkers, family and friends. Julian's service included the U.S. Navy, where he was honorably discharged on September 12, 1954. He retired from the Naval Air Rework Facility (NARF), Pensacola, FL, on May 31, 1985, after a total of 34 years of service in the U.S. Navy. Julian and John served in the U. S. Naval Reserve Seabees for years and retired as an Equipment Operator 1st Class on May 28, 1990. Julian was ordained as a deacon in 1971 at Seven Hills Baptist Church and was a longtime member of Georgetown Baptist Church. He enjoyed many missionary trips with his church to complete construction projects, mainly in Ohio. He also traveled locally to complete weekend construction projects with the church. He also loved gardening - from pecans to tomatoes and okra, but his family and friends will never forget his cherished 50-year-old blueberry bushes. Julian is survived by his identical twin brother, John Rodgers Farill, and four children: Sharon Farill Long (Jerry), Julie Farill Perkins (Curtis), Paul David Farill (Sylvia), and Lisa Farill Curry (Mal). He is also survived by his grandchildren: Sabrina Long Alexander (James), Daniel Wade Long (MaryAnn), Jennifer Long Allen (Van), Chad Lee Long (Lindsey Hollis), Henry Ernest Perkins (Allison), Kayla Perkins Neely (Joey), Ryan Matthew Perkins, Clifton McLean Curry, and Erin Farill Lee (Justin). Additionally, he is survived by his great-grandchildren: James Sudduth Alexander (KayLyn), Ethan McCune Alexander, Brady Farill Long, Chad Lee Long, Jr. (Bayleigh), Jonah Morgan Alexander, Jansen Brooks Lee, and Peter Revere Neely. Julian will also be dearly missed by his nieces, nephews, friends and neighbors. Julian was preceded in death by his wife, Millie Morgan Farill, his parents Julian Paul Farill, Annie Will Rountree Farill and his brother Charles David Farill. The family is grateful for Julian's lifelong service to our country, community, and family. His legendary storytelling will be dearly missed by all who knew him. Visitation will be held at Serenity Funeral Home (8691 Old Pascagoula Rd, Theodore, AL 36582) on Thursday, May 4, 2023, at 10 a.m. and a memorial service in Serenity's chapel at noon. A graveside service will follow at Union Baptist Church. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in his honor to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
