Joyce Marie Ferster

On Friday May 31, 2019, Joyce Marie Ferster, devoted wife and mother, peacefully departed this world. Joyce was born on November 30, 1942 to parents Gladys Marie Brazell and John Frank Brazell. She was the proud sister of six sisters: Beverly, Jeanette, Doris, Tilly, Fern and Pamela along with six brothers: Alvin, Claude, Walter, Roy, Oliver and Glen Brazell. Joyce grew up playing with her many siblings in the West Mobile area known as “Wragg Swamp.” There her imagination grew and blossomed into the enthusiastic story teller and writer she would one day become. Joyce and her sisters were well known in Mobile for their weekly appearances as square dancers on the Friendly Variety Show, which debuted on local television during the 1960’s. Sometimes the family appeared in various skits on the show as well. Joyce was also well known for her sweet smile, personality and beautiful, bright red hair. She often laughed about the fact that the cameras were usually focused on the back of her head. Joyce was not only beautiful but she was bold, daring and always remained calm during the eye of the storm. She was the glue that held her family together and a true leader to her loved ones. She had a passion for writing, singing, attending church and staying involved in her family’s lives. Joyce is preceded in death by her husband Isadore “Joe” Ferster. She is survived by her three children Juanita Hudson, Dallas Lewis Jr. and Tammah Ferster. She left behind 13 grand-children and 13 great-grand children she absolutely adored. Joyce loved good food and socializing with friends and family. She enjoyed watching horror movies and entertaining neighbors during Halloween. To have known Joyce was an absolute pleasure and a treat to most people who knew her. Even after being diagnosed with Diabetes in her early 70’s, Joyce remained high-spirited. She didn’t let her illness get the best of her. She was fond of the many memories she had growing up with her parents. She loved them both, especially her father. He died when Joyce was a young woman and she took it very hard. Joyce often listened to classic music that brought her back to a simpler time- playing records on the juke box at the malt shop. Teen idols such as Elvis Presley and Roy Orbison were among the few she idolized. One of her favorite songs, “Home is Where the Heart is” by Elvis Presley, is a constant reminder of Joyce’s legacy: “Home is where the heart is- and my heart is anywhere you are-anywhere you are is home,” Joyce will always be a reminder of home and forever cherished in our hearts. Services for Joyce Marie Ferster will be held Friday, June 21, at Serenity Gardens Funeral Home. Visitation will be held at 9 a.m. for immediate family and 10-12 for public viewing. Funeral will be held at noon.
