Johnny Levi Callaway

In the early hours of Saturday, December 17, 2022, Johnny L. Callaway, of Theodore, Alabama, passed away at the age of 71. Johnny was born to James and Katherine Callaway in Mobile, Alabama, on November 12, 1951. He graduated Theodore High School in 1971, and loved playing music, getting into trouble, and having fun. Shortly after, he enlisted in the Air Force and was a F4 Crew Chief till 1974, proudly serving his country in the Vietnam War. After returning from the war, he joined his dad at Ingall's Shipyard. He remained at Ingall's till his retirement in 2012. Johnny was a family man, and truly loved being a Callaway. He met his lifelong love, Irene Rood, while he was stationed in Arizona. They built their family and life over the next 47 years. He always made sure he could provide for his family and give them what they needed. He loved his kids and watching them grow into successful adults and extending his Callaway roots with grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He worked hard but played harder. He loved hopping on his Harley and riding throughout the Gulf Coast with his buddies. Johnny was an avid hunter with an amazing shot, loved fishing, and talking to anyone that wanted to listen. In his retirement years, he became highly interested in cooking, sharing his creations with his family and friends. Johnny was best known for his endless stories, boisterous laugh, and unyielding loyalty. He is survived by his wife; three children, Steve Terry (Tonya) of Tupelo, MS, Heather (Michael) of Tampa, FL, and James (Malissa) of Theodore, AL; five grandchildren, Jason, Haley, Alexy, Joslyn, and Hunter; two great-grandchildren, Blake and Lennox; two sisters, Diane Hauptman and Glenda North; other relatives, and friends. Johnny was predeceased by his parents, as well as his brothers, Tommy and Glenn. Visitation will be held on Thursday, December 29, 2022, at 10 AM at Serenity Funeral Home, followed by service at 11 AM, to be presided by Johnny's cousin, Larry Callaway. In lieu of giving flowers, the family asks that those who are able to instead make a donation to the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Johnny's name.
