John Drury Guy

On December 3, 2022 John “Johnny” Drury Guy, loving and much-loved husband, father, Papa, and brother, went home to be with Jesus at the age of 83. John was born on November 21, 1939 in Mobile, AL and lived most of his life in Mobile. He attended Auburn University where he received his degree in horticulture. He worked many jobs including USDA inspector, industrial maintenance, and horticulture, but he loved horticulture most and retired from Bellingrath Gardens in 2019. John also spent a numbers of years in military reserves, first with the Air Force and later with the Army. John is preceded in death by his parents, J. C. and Marie Dudley Guy; brothers, Gene Guy and Tommy Guy; and sister, Barbara Giddens. John is survived by his loving wife, Linda Herston Guy; sons, Phillip (Denice) Guy and Gary (Becky) Guy; grandchildren, Chad Guy, Courtney (Will) Lamb, and Christina Guy; great-grandchildren, Huxley, Leighton, and Tatum Lamb; brothers, Sharon (Sandra) Guy, Don (Sandra) Guy, Henry Guy, and Dean Guy; sisters, Elizabeth King, Shelia Guy, Ann (Doug) Campbell, and Debbie Norris; numerous nieces and nephews; and other extended family and friends. John loved God and he loved his family. If you talked to him for very long you learned of his pride and love for his family. He loved sharing stories of his family especially telling everyone about first, his sons, then, his grandchildren, and more recently, his great-grandchildren. He also had a number of stories of exploits throughout his life that he often entertained with. John was an avid hunter and spent many happy days in the woods tracking deer and preparing food plots. John was known for his ability to do almost anything he set his mind to and do it well. His heart for serving others was one of his chief qualities. John served many years as a children’s Sunday School teacher, usher, and life group member at Cottage Hill Baptist Church. It was only in the last few years that health issues slowed him down in his service. John battled hard against several health issues before his death and we release him to God with broken hearts because we know he embodied the verse from 2 Timothy 4:7 - “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.” A celebration of life memorial is planned for December 16, 2022 at the chapel of Cottage Hill Baptist Church with visitation at 10:00 am and service at 11:00 am. In lieu of flowers donations may be made in John’s memory to Cottage Hill Baptist Church, 4255 Cottage Hill Rd., Mobile, AL 36609.
