James Robert Slater

James “Jim” Robert Slater passed peacefully surrounded by loved ones on Monday, June 3, 2024 at the age of 83. He was born on April 3, 1941 in Inglewood, California. Jim was the oldest of four children. He married Betty Joy Clark on August 7, 1970 in Pascagoula, Mississippi. Jim spent many years in the maintenance department at Singing River Hospital. He was a Pipefitter Foreman, and traveled the world managing piping construction and repair for Raytheon as well as Washington Group Int’l Contractors. He worked in Venezuela, Thailand, Puerto Rico, Boston, and Minnesota. Jim had extensive knowledge in fields of pipefitting and plumbing. Jim and Betty moved to Grand Bay in 1972 where they raised their six children and befriended many. Jim has been an active member of First Baptist Church of Grand Bay since 1972. He loved his prized 1980 Chevy truck, with which he won numerous trophies at southeastern car shows. He was a charter member of the Grand Bay Country Cruzers Antique Car Club. No one could miss the sound of that V-8 engine as he pulled into an event. Jim spent numerous vacations with his beloved wife as a part of Kings of the Road, traveling the country by RV. The couple never met a stranger and again found friends everywhere they went. Golfing was a passion for Jim. He and his friends were on the course at every opportunity. Jim even spent a few retirement years working at Silver King Golf Course. His family finds comfort in knowing he was a child of the King. He has joined those loved ones who preceded him in death: mother Barbara, father James, sister Barbara, son Woody, great-grandbaby Grace, and his dearest, loyal, companion Jimbo, his poodle. Left to cherish his memory are wife Betty Slater, brother Don Slater, sister Paula Slater; children, Jimmy (Jovetta) Slater, Elaina (Jerry) Slater, Terri Tubbs, Lisa (Kurt) Cramer, Robbie (Stacey) Slater; daughters-in-law, Marie Slater and Babes Slater. Jim is also survived by eight grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren. Visitation will take place on Thursday, June 6, 2024 at 10am at First Baptist Church Grand Bay followed by a Memorial service at 10:30am.
