Together, they raised three beautiful daughters who were the pride of James’s life: Taylor McCarthy (Kyle), Cassidy Brenton (Rex Lofton), and Hannah Oliver (Marcus). As a grandfather, James was affectionately known as "Hoss" by his eight adoring grandchildren—Wyatt Lofton, Ace Lofton, Kaycen McCarthy, Monroe Lofton, Rory McCarthy, Maizy McCarthy, Brenton McCarthy, and Clarice Lofton. Being called Hoss was something he looked forward to every day, and it became a name that carried so much love. His grandchildren were the lights of his life, and his joy in their presence was boundless. James had a special bond with each of them, but his connection with Taylor’s first-born daughter, Rory, was extraordinary. Brenton Jr. (Michelle), with whom he shared a lifetime of memories; and his three nephews, Blake Brenton, Hayden Brenton, and Colin Brenton, each of whom he loved dearly. James’s life was further enriched by the many friends and extended family members who loved him dearly. He was preceded in death by his father, William Brenton Sr., his father-in-law, Jesse Tolbert, and his precious grandson, Creed Lofton, whose loss left an indelible mark on James’s heart. James grew up in Irvington, Alabama, and from a young age, displayed an extraordinary work ethic and determination. Straight out of high school, he joined Southern Stamping, a bumper manufacturing company. James began his journey there by washing bumpers, but his relentless drive and dedication saw him rise through the ranks. Through hard work, sacrifice, and an unyielding commitment to excellence, he became the plant manager and eventually took ownership of the company, leading Southern Stamping for 20 remarkable years. Beyond his professional achievements, James was a man of many passions. An avid fisherman, he found peace and joy on the water, casting his line from the boat he loved. He was also a dedicated girls’ softball coach for 12 years, shaping the lives of countless young athletes. James was more than a coach; he was a mentor, a friend, and a guiding light for his players. His impact on the field was matched only by the respect and admiration he earned from parents and fellow coaches alike. James’s love for Auburn football was legendary, rivaled only by his fierce disdain for the Alabama Crimson Tide. Game days were a sacred tradition, filled with laughter, banter, and an unshakeable belief in his Tigers. But above all, James was a man who lived for his family. His grandchildren were the joy of his life, each moment spent with them a treasure. He was a hard-working, selfless, loving, and caring man, whose generosity knew no bounds. James never met a stranger—his warmth and kindness extended to everyone he encountered. He would have given the shirt off his back to help a friend or a stranger in need. James poured his heart and soul into everything he did, from his work to coaching, to his family, to the countless acts of kindness that defined his life. He lived not just for himself but for those he loved and for anyone who needed a helping hand.
