Fred Lewis Wells

Fred Lewis Wells, 75, passed peacefully in his sleep early Sunday, September 3, 2023. Fred lived in Mobile, Alabama, with his wife Maxine. He was born in Logansport, Indiana to Bonnie H. and Donald L. Wells. As a child he lived in Lake Cicott, Indiana and was a frequent fixture at his Grandpa Searight’s farm. After graduating from Royal Center High School, he attended Purdue University. Fred resided in Logansport, Indiana, Houston, Texas, and Charlottesville, Virginia before moving to Mobile in 2013. In Logansport, he and his ex-wife, Sue, owned and operated Wells Antenna and The Balloon Shop. He also served 27 years as Regional Sales Manager for the Amana Raytheon Corporation. In Charlottesville, for over 15 years, he and his predeceased wife, Carole, owned and operated Order From Horder -where Fred was fond of advertising, “We don’t want all the business, just yours!” Fred lovingly supported Carole’s cancer battle and following her death, moved to Mobile. In Mobile, Fred met and married Maxine Wells in 2016 where they have lived happily, enjoying retirement. Active for much of his life, Fred loved league and pickup basketball, as well as building and repairing things around his home. He has left a trail of decks, sidewalks, stonework and other home improvements in his path. His family knew him to be a great story-teller, and he loved to make jokes. Many were duped by his notorious answering machine message, “You’re gonna have to speak up. I can’t hear you!…Whoa, hold on a minute! You don’t have to yell. See, you’re speaking to this dumb machine.” He was a beloved father and grandfather, known for his special talent for calming grandbabies. Fred is survived by an adoring family including wife, Maxine Wells, Mobile, AL; sister Cara Lewellen, Culver, IN; children, Stephanie (Kern) Jackson, Mobile, AL; Amy (Jay) Wyatt, LaFontaine, IN; Michelle (Matthew) Soel, Noblesville, IN; Chad (Nicky) Wells, Raleigh, NC; Robert (Tammy) Wells, Fishers, IN; Mary Ann (Michael Myers), Cicero, IN; Jessica Kain, Waynesboro, VA.; step children, Andrea Leggett, SC; and Antoinette (Samuel) Malonson, Houston, TX; 20 grandchildren; 4 great-grandchildren and extended family. He was preceded in death by a wife, Carole Wells; twin daughters, Heather and Camille Wells; and parents, Bonnie and Donald Wells. Fred’s fun and lively spirit was a blessing to all that knew him. Funeral services are planned for Friday, September 15, 2023, at 2:00 at Serenity Funeral Home, 8691 Old Pascagoula Rd, Theodore, AL 36582.
