Ella Mae Nixon

Ella Mae Nixon of Mobile, Alabama transitioned from this life on Wednesday, August 28, 2024, holding the hand of her daughter, Ruby. Ella Mae was 91 years old. She was born in Wayne County (Hiwannee), Mississippi on May 4, 1933, the sixth of eleven children to John Burl Staten and Ruby Lee (Trotter) Staten. She was a retired cafeteria worker, a devoted mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and great-great grandmother. Ella Mae attended public schools in Hiwannee, Mississippi and joined the Methodist church in that community at an early age. She married Willie F. Nixon in 1950 and dissolved in 1970. The family moved to Mobile, Alabama in 1952 joining the Friendship Baptist Church and was a faithful member. She helped in the building of the original church on 10th Street in Mobile Terrace. She served as an usher and Sunday school teacher for many years. Ella enjoyed watching wrestling, fishing, basketball, and spending time with her family. She was a person of faith and kept God present in everything she desired and accomplished. Throughout her life, she stressed purposeful work, frugality, and education. She was a pillar of strength, dedication, commitment, and determination. She is survived by her four children Willie James (Staci) Nixon, Sr., Ruby Lee (Nixon) McMeans, Ward Julious Nixon, and Roy Louis (Cynthia) Nixon, Sr.; eight grandchildren Willie James (Buck) (Niece) Nixon, Jr., Rico (Taneisha) Nixon, David (Irma) McMeans, III, Roy Louis (Tito) (Fyniss) Nixon, Jr., Sonya Nixon, Shaunna Nixon, Keantha (Nixon) (Freddie) Belton Moore, and Matthew John William Nixon; 21 great grandchildren, and two great-great grandchildren; her sister Lucy (Staten) Howard of Dayton, Ohio, two brothers Eddie Staten of Mobile, Alabama and David Staten, Sr. of Shubuta, Mississippi; and a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents, sisters Albernia (Staten) Hendley and Addie (Staten) Moore; brothers Cleveland Staten, John Lee Staten, Clarence Staten, James Earl Staten, and Joe Willis Staten. A funeral service will be held for Mrs. Ella Mae Nixon at 12 PM on Thursday, September 5, 2024, at Serenity Funeral Home. Visitation hours are Thursday at 10 AM – 12 PM at Serenity Funeral Home. Special thanks: To her daughter, Ruby Lee McMeans for her loyal dedicated service and diligence over the years. To Mary (Nixon) Wyatt, Audria (Don) Robinson, Cynthia Nixon, and Marsha Saulter who consistently showed love and compassion. To Deacon Charlie Lawson, Sr. who faithfully visited and served to consistently keep her in faith and connected to the church when she became housebound.
