Doris Pauline Cole

Doris Pauline Cole, age 100, peacefully went to her eternal home on Friday, May 10, 2024, at the Mobile Infirmary, surrounded by family. Heaven was so overjoyed when she got home that her heavenly Father threw a spectacular light show in the sky for all of us to enjoy! Born in Mobile, Alabama, she grew up in the Mobile area where she lived and worked for much of her life except for roughly 15 years when she lived in Nova Scotia, Canada. After she and Kenneth returned to Alabama, they maintained a summer home in NS for many years while living in Tanner Williams. She worked in several different sectors over the years often holding 2 and 3 jobs to support her family in the early years. Always having a sense of adventure and a willingness to try new things, she worked in the hospitality industry, was a substitute teacher, raised foster children, housed refugees, and even obtained a pilot license. Pauline loved to get her hands in the dirt and was happy with a hoe in her hands or a bushel of fresh vegetables from her garden. Birdwatching was a passion, and she was delighted when her favourites visited the many birdhouses and birdbaths in her yard. She would mimic their songs and chirps and join in their chorus. When grandkids were around so were campfires, bottle rockets and fireworks. She instilled that ritual in all of them at an early age. Her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren received great advice and wisdom from her through her many ‘Pauline-isms.’ Her most often used one was, “You ain’t gonna learn no younger”, when anyone said they didn’t know how to do something. Quitting was not in her character and never allowed as an excuse. Love for Jesus, her family, and her country was what drove her to be the most generous and giving people you’d ever want to meet. She walked the talk, living by example, was always giving a helping hand, a word of advice and sacrificially supported many missionaries around the world. Her first and only Missions Trip was to the Dominican Republic when she was 82 years old, proving that you’re never too old for the mission field. Pauline was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth Cole, three sons Glen Arvon Kendrick, James Richard Cole, and William Gerald Cole, by grandson Stacey Kendrick and granddaughter Krista Cole. She was also predeceased by her parents, James and Dola Mae Crutchfield, and all four of her siblings. Pauline is survived by her daughter Ellen Oliver (Charles), Theodore, her son, Kenneth J. Cole, Tanner Williams, her daughter-in law, Colleen Cole, Nova Scotia, and her honorary daughter-in-law Judy Calloway, Fairhope. With ten grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren and one great-great grandson, Pauline’s quiver was full, thank the Lord! A visitation will be held at Serenity Funeral Home, 8691 Old Pascagoula Rd on Tuesday, May 14, 2024, from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM, followed by a funeral service chapel from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM and burial in Victory Gardens.
