Commander Joseph Anthony Monachino

Joseph Anthony Monachino Sr. (February 9th, 1954 - December 8th, 2018) has left this world behind him and joined the Lord in peace and health. Joe was a proud American of Italian descent. At age four, he immigrated to New York from Italy with his family. Growing up bilingual in an Italian-American community, he acted as a translator during his school years. After his school years, Joe enlisted in the Navy as an aerographer's mate. His lengthy career took him and his family across the world including positions in Canada and Italy. However, it was his time at N.A.S Pensacola that led him to meet his wife of 34 years. Before they even officially met, Joe proclaimed that Angie was to be his wife. His persistence paid off and she became his “forever and a day.” Joe continued to move up through the ranks while earning his Masters degree in electrical engineering which he utilized as a member of the Navy’s Civil Engineer Corps. After 25 years, Joe retired from the Navy with the rank of Commander. After retirement, Joe continued in public service as a member of the Government Services Administration in Mobile, Alabama. In 2004, he gave his life to the Lord and continued to serve Him until his final days. He was greatly involved in church activities with his wife. He spent his time fishing and enjoying the river on his red boat, meticulously creating databases and workbooks to track data, yard work and tinkering in his shed, following his NY Yankees to victory, and spending time with his dog, Maya, and his many family members. Joe was known for always having an answer or advice for any question you gave him. He was quick to help or recognize family and friends in need in any capacity. His ability to repeat dad jokes year after year and still garner laughter was unmatched. He will be greatly missed for his level-headed and effective decision making, his meticulous attention to detail, his great love for his family, and his unique sense of humor. He is irreplaceable. He is survived by his wife, Angie Monachino (née Powell); his children, David Monachino (granddaughter, Gaby Monachino), Jamie Monachino (Rex Holliday), and Joey Monachino (Darian Monachino); his mother-in-law, Lela Powell; his brother-in-law, Ricky Powell (Janet Powell); his sister-in-law, Linda Morgan (John Morgan, niece - Savannah Morgan); sister-in-law Sandy Monachino; sister, Mary Pietraszko; sister-in-law, Deborah Chillemi; and brother, Jack Monachino. His beloved dog, Maya, remains a joy to the family. He is survived by many more nieces, nephews, and cousins spread across the United States and Italy. He is predeceased by his parents, Antonio and Santa Monachino; brother Vinnie Monachino; and father-in-law, Alfred C. Powell. Visitation, from 2:00pm to 4:00pm, with funeral services immediately following will be held on Thursday, December 13th at Serenity Funeral Homes on 8691 Old Pascagoula Rd, Theodore, AL 36582. Pastor Tim Riggs will officiate. A private graveside ceremony with full military honors will follow on Friday at N.A.S. Pensacola. The family requests donations to Joe’s favorite charity, Mission Pre-born, in lieu of flowers.
