Dr. Clifford Edwin Newell, Jr.

Clifford Edwin Newell, age 73, of Semmes, Alabama passed away on Tuesday, October 29, 2024 at home. Clifford was born on February 7, 1951 in Mt. Pleasant, Michigan. He was the son of the late Clifford Newell, Sr. and the late Minnie Grace Newell. He was the husband of Diane Elaine King Newell and they were married for 53 years. He was a father to daughter, Joy Elaine Newell Wooten (Kevin) and son, Clifford Edwin Newell, III (Toni). He had 6 grandchildren: Bailey, Taylor, Maria, and Lincoln Newell, Julia (Wyatt) Watson, and Sarah Wooten. He also had 3 great grandchildren, Thomas Rylee, and Olivia Watson. In addition to his wife, children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren, he had 6 brothers: Jim (Faye) Newell, Bill (Linda) Newell, Charles (Dawn) Newell, David (Karen) Newell, Robert Newell (Ray Cruise), and the late Ted (Vicki) Newell. Dr. Newell grew up in Mt. Pleasant, Michigan and graduated with a 2 year certificate from the Memphis School of Preaching, a Bachelor’s degree in Bible from Southern Christian University, Master’s in Bible from Southern Christian University and a Doctorate in Ministry from Southern Christian University. Clifford taught at the Florida School of Preaching in Lakeland, Florida and the Tri-City School of Preaching in Elizabethton, Tennessee. He has done mission work in Scotland as well as spoke on numerous lectureships, gospel meeting, vacation Bible schools, and camps. He has spoken on radio shows and television shows spreading God’s word and answering questions. He wrote numerous articles for Christian publications and books. He served as an elder for many years in several congregations. He led numerous souls to Christ. He was a faithful Christian and preached for 49 years. Clifford loved his family dearly. He loved grilling hot dogs and smoking a turkey. He loved to play card games, board games, yard games, tell jokes and watch Michigan football. He enjoyed golfing, traveling, listening to the Statler Brothers, taekwondo, and reading his Bible. He enjoyed sitting on his porch swing in the screened in porch with his dog, Gracie, watching the birds and squirrels play. He was always out ministering to the congregation, visiting members (even when he was in a wheelchair), calling on the sick, sending cards, making calls, etc. He enjoyed doing yard work until he just wasn’t able anymore. Clifford just enjoyed working. He was hard to keep still. He was always building or doing something to help someone. Family and friends are invited to a memorial service on Saturday, November 2, 2024 at 10:00 AM at the Central Church of Christ, 225 Saraland Blvd. S. Saraland, Alabama. Visitation will begin at 9:30 AM. In lieu of flowers, Clifford has requested that donations be made to the Central Church of Christ to support our missionaries.
