    Mrs. Elizabeth Matilda Powell

    April 7, 1935 - November 10, 2021

Elizabeth Matilda Cash Powell passed away November 10, 2021 at the age of 86. Elizabeth was born April 7, 1935 to Dennis James and Gertrude Grace Cash. She was the 3rd daughter born in a family of 14 children and loved each and everyone of her 7 brothers and 6 sisters dearly. Our mother was truly the best and was always putting her family before anything. She loved God and Jesus and always tried to please them. She married the love of her life on December 24, 1955 and became the best wife and best stay-at-home mother ever. She always made sure she was home when we came in from school, waiting with a snack for us. She was a wonderful cook, having learned from the best, her mother and mother-in-law, and made sure we had a home-cooked supper every night. Mama raised us to be strong adults and even though we were grown, she never stopped guiding us through life. She loved being a mom, but becoming a grandmother made her so very happy. She loved each grandchild with all of her heart. One of the greatest blessings ever was her becoming a great-grandmother; Mama's heart was so full. Mom was not an adventurous person but she did enjoy our family vacations to Texas in 1969 to visit her dear sister, Audrey and a trip to Tennessee in 1973 where we were joined by her youngest and dear sister Elnora. In 2006 our whole family (4 generations) decided to take a trip to Tennessee again. Mama said while it was fun, she didn't think she would be doing it again. Our mom did enjoy going to the boats from time to time. She mainly loved pulling the handle and hearing the coins drop. It was one of the only things that she enjoy outside of her family time. In the middle of our lives she became the caregiver of her mother-in-law and our daddy's uncle, Eben, making sure their final years were the best. She is preceded in death by her parents, Dennis James Cash and Gertrude Grace Gould Cash; beloved baby boy, William Russell Powell, Sr.; seven brothers, Edward Cash, James Cash, Melvin Cash, William (Boe) Cash, Raymond Cash, Danny Boy Cash, and Charles Cash; and five sisters, Annie McDuffie, Audrey Allison, Agnes Freeny, Alice Mason, and Dorothy Cash. She is survived by her husband of 65 years, William Curtis Powell, Jr.; daughters, Judy Powell and Janet Powell (Robby Calloway); five grandchildren, Danny and Katie Calloway, Lindsey Powell (Michael Cochran), Rusty (Susie) Powell and Tyler Buettel; eight great-grandchildren, Lydia, Cullen and Natalee Calloway, Chloe, Curtis and Caleb Powell, and Tori and McKenzie Cochran; sister, Elnora (Thomas) Long; along with many nephews, nieces, other relatives, and friends. Mom may be in heaven with Jesus now but her love lives on in all of us, and our lives will be forever changed. Love you, Mama. You will always be in our hearts.
