August 16, 1927 - November 17, 2021
Dorothy "Dot" Lucille Etheridge, age 94, of Mobile, AL, passed away peacefully at home, in the loving care of her granddaughter, Dr. Jennifer Griffin, on November 17, 2021. Dot was born in Kosciusko, Mississippi in 1927. She moved to Mobile as a teenager and graduated from Bishop-Toolen High School in 1945. Although Mobile was her home for most of her life, she lived in Guam, Wyoming, and California as a military wife in the late 1940s and 1950s. She later became an insurance adjuster and worked well into her 80s when her health forced her to retire. Dot also worked as a Mary Kay cosmetics consultant and director, a position she held for over thirty years. She genuinely enjoyed building relationships with both her customers and consultants. Dot cherished life, family, and visiting with her many friends. Her pastimes included dancing with her husband, Steve, working in her yard, and playing with her dogs, Ginger and Toddy, and her cat, Fred. She was loved by everyone and was always there to lend a helping hand or offer advice. Her heart was full of love and generosity and she opened her home to family members and friends in need many times during her life. She had a strong faith and was a long-time member of Moffett Road Baptist Church in Mobile. Dot was a devoted daughter, wife, mother, grandmother, and friend. She will be greatly missed by everyone in her life. Dot was preceded in death by her loving husband, Steve; parents, Frank and Mattie Jones; sisters, Alyine Proctor Richards of Gould, Arkansas and Jerrye Proctor Grigsby of Texas; and daughter, Diane Smith Griffin of Mobile. She is survived by her children, Ronnie (Rheta) Smith and Steven Etheridge of Mobile, Dr. Matthew Etheridge of Pensacola, Florida, Debbie (Pat) Etheridge McKelvey of Hobbs, New Mexico; brother, James Allen (Carnell) Proctor of North Little Rock, Arkansas; many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren; nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends. The family would like to extend their heartfelt appreciation to the staff of Alabama Hospice Care of Mobile and her loving friend, Pat Hickbottom, for the extraordinary care they provided over the past year. Visitation will be held on Thursday, December 2, 2021 from 10 am-12 pm at Serenity Funeral Home, followed by the service at 12 pm. Interment will be held at Pine Crest Cemetery immediately following the service. Friends and relatives are invited to join the family for a reception from 3 pm-6 pm at the Celebration of Life Building adjacent to Serenity Funeral Home. The service will be streamed through Serenityfuneralhome.com. Under the obituary go to photos and videos about 10 minutes prior to the service.
