Don Parmer opened Serenity Memorial Gardens and Lawn Haven Memorial Gardens in December 1966. By 1969, he and his company were offering complete cemetery arrangements in advance of need. As he became more intimately associated with people who were undergoing the same sense of loss he experienced as a child, his strong desire to serve moved him to expand his field of operations. In September 1986, he opened Serenity Funeral Home on Old Pascagoula Road in Theodore, Alabama. Though it is adjacent to Serenity Memorial Gardens, it is there to serve all area cemeteries.
Serenity Funeral Home held its first service the day before the
Grand Opening and has been active in its service to the community ever since.
The Serenity Family of employees has grown to over fifty people with a
combined experience of over 500 years in various aspects of funeral service.
Serenity Funeral Home is pleased to offer all services and
needs at the time of death. We are especially proud of our Pre-Need
Planning Department, where every part on an individual's funeral service can
be thought out, planned, and paid for in advance of need.
On April 27, 1991, Don passed away. In his last
will and testament, he left Serenity Funeral Home and the Gardens in a
trust to be governed by trustees with the instructions to hold the family
business in tact, operating with the emphasis on service to the community.
Upon Don's death, his sister, Glenda Bullard, took
over as President and CEO of Serenity Funeral Home and the Gardens.
Under Glenda's leadership, the company has continued to grow. In
the fall of 1992, the mausoleum was opened, and in 1995. the cemetery
was expanded to include an additional garden.
In addition to the cemeteries, Don Parmer also founded Gulf Coast Vault Company, whereas they manufactureburial vaults to fulfull their obigations to their families. November, 1993 the group of companies was merged into one corporation known as SLG Group, Inc., doing business as, Serenity Funeral Home, Serenity Memorial Gardens, Lawn Haven Memorial Gardens And Gulf Coast Vault Company. Serenity Funeral Home prides itself on being one of the few locally owned establishments in this area.
